Main focus of cooperation

Exchange of experiences and multilateral projects in the following areas:

  • Municipal administration / administration practices
  • Residential building subsidies and improvement of living conditions for disadvantaged groups
  • Environment / local agenda
  • Transportation (EU project involving Cambridge, Bautzen, Montpellier and Heidelberg: “From EGO-mobility to ECO-mobility”, 1993)
  • Women’s equality (International Women’s Day 1998) involving Cambridge, Bautzen, Montpellier and Heidelberg
  • Accessibility (European Year of People with Disabilities 2003) involving Heidelberg, Cambridge and Montpellier
  •  Science (representatives of Cambridge University attend joint conference with EMBO/EMBL on the subject of “Science and Security" in 2005)
  • Urban planning (conference “Sustainability in Urban Planning as Reflected in EU Legislation - Effects at Municipal Level" marking the 40th anniversary of the twinning of the cities in 2005)
  • Climate protection (cooperation between municipal administration and universities in Cambridge and Heidelberg in the field of energy-efficient and sustainable urban development)

Youth exchange:

  • Annual international youth exchange (in sport, music and culture) organized by Heidelberg’s association of youth organizations, alternating between Heidelberg and Cambridge since 1981
  • Student exchange programs between schools in Heidelberg and Cambridge
  • Participation by young people from Cambridge in the International Summer Science School Heidelberg (ISH), an annual international exchange program organized by the City of Heidelberg to encourage young scientists and international exchange

Exchange between citizens, associations and institutions:

  • Visits to Cambridge by citizens’ groups organized by the Heidelberg-Cambridge friendship society and visits to Heidelberg by citizens’ groups from Cambridge
  • Contacts between citizens at all levels
  • Exchange between Christian churches
  •  International sports symposium with Heidelberg’s twin cities organized by Sportkreis Heidelberg and the City of Heidelberg since 1999
  • Exchange between Heidelberg’s “Akademie für Ältere” and the University of the Third Age in Cambridge

Cultural exchange:

  • Annual meeting of young musicians organized by Heidelberg’s association of youth organizations, involving Cambridge, Montpellier and Heidelberg, since 1962
  • Concerts and reciprocal guest performances in Heidelberg and Cambridge
  • Exhibitions in Heidelberg and Cambridge
  • Theater performances in Heidelberg and Cambridge
