Multilingual help in sorting waste
Waste-sorting guides in a range of languages
The language barrier can be a real problem when trying to understand how to sort your waste properly. For example, if you were on holiday in Poland, would you know that ‘odpady zmieszane’ meant ‘residual waste’? Or in Turkey, that ‘boyalar’ means ‘paints’? As part of its ‘People with an immigration background’ (Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund) project, the city wants to raise awareness among Heidelberg’s immigrant population of the need to sort their waste.
For some years now, the city’s Office of Waste Management and Municipal Cleansing has published information in 11 languages, explaining how to sort household waste correctly. The information is available from any of the city’s administrative offices (Bürgerämter), and can be requested from the Office of Waste Management and Municipal Cleansing (Amt für Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung), or downloaded from the city’s website at www.heidelberg.de/abfall.
