Bicycles

33 percent of Heidelberg residents use bicycles to get around the city. For distances between one and five kilometers, the bicycles are the main mode of transport in Heidelberg, according to the study "Mobility in Cities". Heidelberg's network of bike paths covers around 480 kilometers. In 2018, Heidelberg was honored by the state as a Bicycle-Friendly Municipality for the second time. The prize for the first award in 2012 was a bicycle counting system, which now collects important data for traffic planning on the south side of the Ernst Walz Bridge. There are currently fourteen bicycle counting systems in Heidelberg. Heidelberg is also a model municipality for the RadKULTUR initiative of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport (in German).

Pedestrians

In the city of short distances, many destinations can be easily reached by foot. To ensure that children are also chauffeured less often, there are the guidelines for child-friendly traffic planning (in German) that Heidelberg's children's representatives have drawn up. Since 2006, these have been accepted as a checklist for all traffic decisions made by the city, whose central goal is family-friendly urban and traffic planning.

Public transport

Just under a third of all Heidelberg residents use public transportation as their primary mode of transportation. In May 2011, the city council decided on a comprehensive and ambitious expansion of the city's tramway network.
